Mentally challenged woman attacked

Transit police are trying to find two homeless women accused of attacking a mentally challenged woman at a bus stop last week.

The attack occurred about 8 a.m. Monday and followed an earlier verbal dispute, Deputy Chief Lewis Best said.

The unidentified victim, a 26-year-old, encountered the women again later at a Silver Line stop at East Berkeley and Washington streets. They started verbally assaulting the woman again and when she tried to use her cell phone to call police, the women punched her in the head and torso. She was not seriously injured, Best said.

“She was knocked to the ground at which point they took a bag of clothing that belonged to the victim and tried to leave the area,” Best said.

The victim was able to get back the bag of clothing after a brief struggle, but the women made off with her cell phone.

A T bus driver who was sitting nearby on his disabled bus witnessed the fight and radioed for police.

Witnesses can call 617-222-1212 with tips.
