A Connecticut school is getting a leg up on the latest fashion trend, mulling a ban on skinny jeans.
According to WFSB TV, the Meriden School Board of Education in Connecticut is considering a proposal to ban clothes they say are too form fitting in order to prevent students from being distracted.
Leotards, leggings, skinny jeans, spandex and other revealing garb would be prohibited under the new policy, which would also require that undergarments be worn inside an outfit.
The idea was proposed at the school board meeting this week and will be voted on in April.
“Hopefully they can change it where everyone is on the same playing field,” one mother told the TV station.
But not everyone thinks a stricter dress code will make students pay attention.
Geoff Kenyon, the teacher’s union representative, said that the dress code could lead to an “unhealthy atmosphere” and an “us versus them mentality,” according to Patch.com.
“We are channeling too much valuable time, energy and resources into a futile pursuit,” he told the website.
He said that students would miss valuable class time if they were forced to change their clothes or were suspended for dress-code violations.
School uniforms, he suggested, would be a much simpler solution.
