NEW ENGLAND – The former head of a New England mob family was charged Thursday as part of a massive federal sweep on organized crime families.

Luigi Manocchio, 83, the alleged head of the New England La Cosa Nostra family, was among the 91 members and associates of seven organized crime families from New Jersey, New York and Providence that were rounded up in the sweep.

The charges ranged from murder and arson to loansharking and labor racketeering, according to federal authorities.
