Eighteen purebred Chinese Shar Pei dogs were pulled from an alleged “hoarding house” in Braintree last week, the MSPCA announced today.
The dogs—which range in age from 6 months to 2 years old—were living in filthy conditions and suffering from eye and skin disorders. MSPCA Law Enforcement officials are not releasing the identity of the owner, but said that she will not face charges.
“The owner realized thing had just gotten out of hand and she voluntarily surrendered the dogs,” said MSPCA Spokesman Rob Halpin.
Four of the dogs were returned to the owner after they were spayed, because they were “particularly bonded to her and we did not feel we’d be able to get them into new adoptive homes,” Halpin said.
One of the dogs was extremely aggressive and unable to be placed for adoption, Halpin said, so the MSPCA “humanely euthanized him.”
The remaining dogs are being cared for at the MSPCA’s adoption center in Jamaica Plain. All of the dogs will need eye surgery to remove part of their eyelids from their eyeball – a common condition in Shar Pei dogs – but at least three of them are now ready for adoption, according to Halpin.
