MTA won’t refund for lost transit days

Subway riders who own weekly or monthly MetroCards shouldn’t hold their breath for a refund after the MTA shut down the system for two days this weekend.

The MTA has no plans to issue refunds to passengers, or even to extend monthly MetroCards two days longer to make up for the closure.

The agency is, however, pushing for its own refund. The transit authority would like the Federal Emergency Management Agency and insurers to reimburse them for the millions it cost to preemptively shut down the system for the storm. The MTA shut down at noon on Saturday and re-opened Monday.

“If successful, we hope to put those funds to use benefiting customers,” said an MTA spokesman. He did not elaborate on what those benefits might be.
