A 6-year-old Toms River boy who was accidentally shot by his 4-year-old neighbor Monday evening has died.

Brandon Holt died at Jersey Shore University Medical Center on Tuesday, Toms River Patch reports.

Holt's 4-year-old playmate shot him in the head with a .22-caliber rifle the younger boy had retrieved from his parents' McCormick Drive home sometime around 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Police reportedly recovered several other firearms from the home.

It remains unclear whether the 4-year-old boy actually pulled the trigger or if the gun accidentally discharged.
