Nutter goes digital in volunteer effort

FAIRMOUNT – The largest MLK Day of Service volunteer event took place at Girard College yesterday morning, where hundreds of people young and old cleaned out old computers and made them reusable for city residents who don’t currently have Web access.

Mayor Michael Nutter was among the crowded gymnasium on the massive campus off Poplar Street.

“The computer is your passport, not only to the future but to knowing what’s going around you,” Nutter told the crowd as they began taking apart, then rebuilding, about 5,000 computers. Their work is part of a larger, two-year, $25 million initiative for citywide residents.
