An armed suspect attempting to rob a Manhattan cell phone store on Wednesday afternoon was foiled by a locked display case, police said.
Authorities reported that the suspect walked into the Bc Wireless store on Madison Avenue near East 36th Street at around 3 p.m.
Once inside the Midtown store, the suspect asked a clerk how much the iPhones on display would cost. Investigators said the clerk began to help what he thought was a customer when the man pulled out a gun.
The suspect demanded that the clerk get on the floor. Once the worker complied, the armed suspect walked around the counter.
Police said he tried to open the display cases but was unable to and ultimately fled from the scene empty handed, leaving the clerk unharmed.
The suspect is described as a black male, between 18 and 20 years old and with dreadlocks. Video surveillance from the store showed him wearing a black hooded sweater, hood up.
NYPD officials are asking anyone with information on the robbery or the suspect to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS or to submit tips online.
