The 36-year-old woman killed in an early morning car crash on the Queensboro Bridge today was an off-duty NYPD officer, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said.

The commissioner said Officer Elisa Toro, 36, was a 10-year veteran of the NYPD and a mother of two sons, ages 17 and 13.

"This was a particular tragedy for our department," Kelly said.

The crash occurred around 1:52 a.m. on the Long Island City side of the bridge.

Police reports indicated Toro was driving over the bridge when she hit a guard rail.

The car then slammed into a cement barrier and overturned before skidding into a vacant storefront on Queens Plaza South. Toro, the sole occupant in the vehicle, was thrown from the car during the crash and pronounced dead at the scene, Kelly said.

Kelly said the cement barriers there had been put up because of previous accidents at that site.
