Federal agents arrested an NYPD officer and a Customs and Border Protection officer on international gun trafficking charges, the U.S. Attorney's Office reported.
The two officers are brothers.Police Officer Rex Maralit worked out of NYPD headquarters at One Police Plaza in Manhattan. His brother Wilfredo worked at Los Angeles International Airport.
They are charged with conspiring to violate the Arms Export Control Act with a third brother, Ariel, by exporting high-powered weapons to the Philippines without a license from the State Department. They are also facing charges of conspiracy to engage in unlicensed firearms dealing.
They allegedly used their law enforcement credentials to get their hands on military-grade assault rifles, sniper rifles and other high-powered weapons.
Rex Maralit will make his first court appearance at the U.S. Courthouse in Brooklyn this afternoon. Wilfredo Maralit will appear at the U.S. Courthouse in Santa Ana, Calif., and is expected to be extradited to New York to faces charges.
The third brother, Ariel, is in the Philippines. The U.S. government is working with foreign authorities to assist in his capture.
