Mayor Michael Bloomberg took a hard line this morning when the conversation turned to Occupy Wall Street.
Bloomberg was talking about the subject of permits on John Gambling’s show on WOR-AM when he said, “We will start enforcing that more,” according to the New York Post.
The mayor did say protesters had been “peaceful” up until this point, though he expressed concern that the movement has begun to interfere with other New Yorkers’ rights to enjoy Zuccotti Park and the surrounding area.
“We’ll eventually have to work something out here,” he said, but did not go into detail about what kind of action could be coming.
Last Friday, police backed down from clearing the area after Brookfield Properties, the company that owns Zuccotti Park, postponed its plan to clean the park.
Meanwhile, about 100 people gathered in Harlem in front of the Adam Clayton Powell State Office Building this afternoon. They chanted, “Cease, desist, stop and frisk” in reference to the NYPD’s “stop and frisk” practice. The group was joined by protesters from the Occupy Wall Street movement. According to the Twitter account for New York Civil Liberties Union, about 32 people were arrested, including Princeton professor Dr. Cornel West, though police have not yet confirmed that.
