Officer injured in Tacony shooting recovering at home

A Philadelphia police officer whose head was grazed by a bullet this morning during an incident in Tacony has been released from the hospital.

A Philadelphia police officer whose head was grazed by a bullet this morning during an incident in Tacony has been released from the hospital.

Stephen Korpalski, a 14-year veteran of the force, is now recovering at home with his wife and 3-week-old daughter, police confirmed.

The suspect who shot at Korpalski was killed when Korpalski and three other officers returned fire. His identity is still being confirmed, police said.

The incident occurred when Korpalski and his partner responded to a call of a person with a gun on on the 6400 block of Ditman Street in Tacony.

When Korpalski and his partner, in uniform and driving a police wagon, attempted to stop the suspect near the intersection of Magee Street and Torresdale Avenue, the suspect reportedly fired at the officers, grazing the left side of Korpalski's head.

Korpalski, his partner and other officers arriving on the scene fired at the suspect.

Korpalski was transported to Albert Einstein Medical Center in stable condition and was released this morning.

The suspect was transported to Aria-Torresdale Hospital in Frankford and was pronounced dead at 1:35 a.m.

The suspect's weapon was recovered at the scene of the shooting.
