A group of police officers fired upon a car that rammed a police cruiser during a traffic stop Sunday night and ended up killing a man riding inside.
Brandon Payne, 23, of Lynn, was shot twice when officers opened fire. He was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital where he died about 5:35 a.m. yesterday, according to the Essex district attorney’s office.
Lynn police, in a statement, said they witnessed Payne walking near Essex Street and “carrying a secreted long arm weapon.”
Payne, along with two other men, then got into a car that was being followed by a second car.
When Lynn police tried to stop the car transporting Payne on Ingalls Street at about 9:30 p.m., the car allegedly rammed a police cruiser. Police said the stop included both marked and unmarked police vehicles.
“Three Lynn police officers and a Massachusetts State Police trooper fired at the suspect during the assault with the motor vehicle,” Lynn police said in the statement.
Police said that the names of the officers involved in the shooting would not be immediately released. Authorities are investigating.
A shotgun and a handgun were recovered after the shooting, police said.
Payne has a criminal history, according to court records, but most of the charges were dismissed.
He was committed to the Department of Youth Services in 2002 for assault and battery, according to the Globe.
A woman who answered the door at Payne’s grandmother’s Lynn home declined to comment.
Family members outside Payne’s father’s home told the Globe he was devoted to his relatives, including his three young children.
Three charged
Three other people who were allegedly riding in the car were charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and gun charges, according to police.
