Park51 opens tonight – Metro US

Park51 opens tonight

Park51, the community center and mosque two blocks from Ground Zero that attracted controversy last year, will officially open to the public tonight at 6:30 p.m.

Park51 has opened its doors to the public before, but tonight is the center’s grand opening and first major public event. Metro will be there tonight covering the grand opening live.

Community Board 1 chair Julie Menin and Sharif El-Gamal, head of the project, will speak this evening.

Rana Sodhi, a Sikh whose brother was murdered in a hate crime, will also be a guest speaker. The space is showing a photography exhibit, NYChildren, which shows children from 160 countries living in the city.
