A Brooklyn councilman plans to propose a bill that would require snowplows to have flashing lights and make sounds to warn pedestrians.
Councilman Mark Treyger will introduce the bill this week in order to better alert pedestrians when a plow is approaching in snowy weather.
Two people were killed by snowplows in Brooklyn this winter: a 36-year-old pregnant woman in Sunset Park and a 73-year-old man who was struck by a backhoe pushing snow in Brighton Beach.
“You’re dealing with low visibility,” Treyger told The New York Daily News. “If we can buy a few seconds for these pedestrians to give them time to react, this could save a life.”
Under the law, both Department of Sanitation trucks as well as plows privately contracted by the city would be required to have flashing lights and make a loud, distinctive sound.
