WASHINGTON. Americans are largely hopeful that cancer will be cured and that computers will be able to chat with them by 2050, but they are also braced for a major energy crisis and a warming planet, according to a survey released yesterday.

The poll by the Pew Research Center shows Americans are in general far less hopeful than they were in 1999. More than half, or 58 percent, fear another world war in the next 40 years and 53 percent expect a terrorist attack against the United States using a nuclear weapon.
