Those considering a visit can take a "virtual walk" through desired museums on Instagram before actually attending in person, while museums can use geo-tagged photos to measure the success of particular exhibitions and tweak displays based on feedback received.
The Philadelphia Museum of Art's Instagram account, @philamuseum, boasts 1,801 followers and has posted 161 photos.
Other institutions that made the cut include New York City's Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art and Guggenheim Museum, the Louvre in Paris, the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, Los Angeles' Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museo Malba in Buenos Aires and the Amsterdam Tattoo Museum.
