Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers will retire next year, according to multiple reports.

Ayers announced during last night's Awards of Valor ceremony that he intends to retire in about nine months. He has served as fire commissioner since December 2004.

Ayers' career as a firefighter began in 1974. He was on the job for 31 years.

The National Liberty Museum's Awards of Valor ceremony recognizes city and suburban firefighters and police officers.
