Philadelphia man arrested for fatally hitting pedestrian at bus stop

Elton Paynter, 26, charged with vehicular homicide, DUI and related offenses.

Delaware State Police have arrested a Philadelphia man for a fatal Wilmington car crash that occurred Saturday morning.

Elton Paynter, 26, is charged with first-degree vehicular homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol with a suspended license. He was arraigned and committed to Howard Young Prison after failing to post
$11,000 cash bail.

Paynter was allegedly speeding in his 1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme on Philadelphia Pike when, around 8:23 a.m., he lost control of the vehicle and spun out, crossing into the opposite lane. The car's rear struck two trees, then hit a 52-year-old Wilmington man who was waiting at a bus stop and continued, striking several objects, including a parked car, before coming to a stop, police said.

The 52-year old victim was pronounced dead on the scene. His identity has not yet been released pending next of kin notification.

Two passengers from the Oldsmobile were also injured. Sharmaine Lyles, 27, of Philadelphia and Kirtis Golden, 30, of Upper Darby, were taken to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center for non-life threatening injuries.

Once released from the hospital, Golden was arrested for possession of six grams of marijuana and a stun gun, according to police. He was released on $1,500 bail.
