The Philadelphia Zoo, after securing a $6 million grant from the William Penn Foundation, plans to open a new trail system next year that would allow zoo animals more room to roam and visitors a chance to see the animals in a new light.

The trail will include passageways for animals to travel and move away from their typical habitats and explore new environments. The trail is set to open in the spring.

A Penn Foundation representative said this investment is part of larger strategy to further develop West Fairmount Park.

“As the zoo's and the city’s statures continue to rise, this new, imaginative zoo experience will also contribute toward realizing a long-term vision for West Fairmount Park as a dynamic public space and destination,” said Laura Sparks, chief philanthropy officer at the William Penn Foundation, in a news release.
