Report: Philly fourth best city for single men, not so much for single women

love park Philadelphia is apparently living up to motto the City of Brotherly Love.

Finance website Nerd Wallet released a ranking of the best cities for singles. While Philly scored the number four spot for single men, it did not, unfortunately, even break the top ten when it came to single women.

“The main reason it didn’t crack the list for women is the ratio of men to women,” Nerd Wallet analyst Dizya Raghazan said, adding that Philadelphia was named the 17th city for single ladies.

“There are more unmarried women in Philadelphia than unmarried men,” she said. “For example, cities that did crack the top 10 are places like San Diego, where there are five unmarried men for every unmarried woman.”

Philadelphia, conversely, has a single female-to-male ratio of about .95 to 1, tipping the scale in favor of the not-so-fair sex.

“Philly is great for single males because Philly has more women than men, so that helps your odds,” Raghazan said.

The study also took into account cities’ walkability scores and the number of pickup spots like bars and gyms. “Philly has a lot of opportunities to meet people – it’s very walkable and that means there’s also a high density of shops and restaurants in the area,” Raghazan said. “So you’ll be outside and you’ll be meeting people.”

Also taken into account was each the average cost of a date in each place, which Nerd Wallet determined by calculating the price of a 12-inch Pizza Hut pizza, a movie ticket and a six-pack of beer.

“Philly is just an affordable city,” Raghazan said. “There are many things to do.” Luckily, those go beyond pizza and beer – Raghazan cited the city’s rich cultural scene, pedestrian-friendly strips like Walnut Street in Rittenhouse Square and, of course, our “delicious cheesesteaks.”

By the numbers

The average cost of a date in Philadelphia.

10.2%
