More than 14,000 volunteers — about a thousand more than last year — participated in cleaning and greening projects around Philadelphia is the Seventh Annual Philly Spring Cleanup over the weekend.


A total of 1,122,880 pounds of cleanup material was removed, which is 100,000 more pounds than last year's total.


“Philadelphians have stepped up to the plate," Mayor Michael Nutter said. “I am truly impressed with the passion and dedication throughout the city to make Philadelphia a cleaner, greener and safer place."
