Think you have what it takes to be Philadelphia's second-ever poet laureate?

The city is now accepting applications, which must be sent by 11:59pm on Sept. 30 or can be submittedonline.

The new selection will have some big shoes to fill. Sonia Sanchez, a well-known and renowned writer, educator and activist, assumed the position of Philadelphia’s inaugural poet laureate in January 2012.

Sanchez will complete her two-year term at the end of 2013.

“It is a great honor to have had Sonia Sanchez serve as Philadelphia’s first poet laureate,” said Mayor Michael A. Nutter. “She has set the bar high for the position, and I am looking forward to seeing what the next poet laureate envisions for their term.”

Surprisingly, a city with a rich history of housing well-known wordsmiths had never bestowed the honor upon one of its citizens, untilNutter established the position to give one talented poet the opportunity to publicly represent the city in the medium of poetry and to serve the art form within the city, according to a news release.

The new laureate's two-year term will start in January.
