An investigation is underway after a Massachusetts Air National Guard F-15C military fighter jet crashed in Virginia Wednesday morning.
Defense officials said the pilot was missing following the crash, which happened around 9 a.m. in Deerfield, VA. NBC reported that the jet was en route from Massachusetts to New Orleans when it crashed; the pilot reported an emergency before the plane went down.
No injuries on the ground were immediately reported, according to WJLA. Virginia State Police launched a helicopter to search for the pilot, who was said to have ejected from the plane before impact.
"It's the loudest noise I've ever heard," Rebecca Shinaberry, 63, told the AP. "(It) just shook the ground, and from my house we could just see a big plume of smoke."
James Keefe, commander of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, said officials were "hopefulthat the pilot is OK, and the pilot will be in our thoughts and prayers."
