Plans show sleek extension to Penn Station

Hope that Penn Station commuter traffic will ebb.

A promise to give commuters another entryway into Penn Station inched closer to reality today.

The building, across the street from Penn Station, will be revamped to create another entrance into that labyrinth, which hosts the subway, along with the Long Island Rail Road, Amtrak, the PATH and New Jersey Transit.

The sleek station, planned to cost $267 million, will connect directly to Penn Station and open in 2016.

Renderings show skylights streaming into an airy main room and wavy ceiling beams overhead as commuters check times on a digital screen.

Officials promise the station will alleviate traffic at Penn Station, the country’s busiest train station. About 500,000 commuters pass through Penn Station every day, according to the Port Authority.

Construction will include building access to tracks for Amtrak, NJ Transit and the Long Island Rail Road and more elevators, escalators and stairs to ferry New Yorkers to and from trains.

The late New York Sen. Daniel Moynihan, namesake of the proposed building, had long pushed for the building to be transformed into a train station, allowing commuters more entrances into stuffed Penn Station.

Officials are also trying to find out how to revamp Penn Station, much maligned for its aesthetically unpleasing edifice. According to Crains New York, the MTA commissioned a report on ways to improve commuter traffic and improve its appearance.
