Delaware State Police Saturday night arrested a Newark man for allegedly robbing a grandmother as she walked with her children in the parking lot of the Christiana Mall.

Police said the victim, 39, was shortly before 9:45 p.m. walking with her two daughters, aged 10 and 19, and her granddaughter, 2, from the mall's J.C. Penny store to the woman's vehicle.

The suspect, who investigators said was later identified as 35-year-old Donald Michalkiewicz, allegedly approached the woman from the rear, grabbed her pursue and dragged her to the ground.

Police said he then began to run across the parking lot with the victim's purse, but two mall security officers patrolling the area gave chase and were able to apprehend him near the parking lot's outside edge.

Arriving troopers also allegedly found Michalkiewicz to be in possession of a stolen GPS system.

The victim's purse was returned to her with its contents intact.

She was taken by medics to Christiana Medical Center, where she was treated for an injury to her hand.

Michalkiewicz was arrested and charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and one count each of first-degree robbery, third-degree assault, theft under $1,000 and receiving stolen property under $1,000.

He was jailed at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $65,000 bond.
