Police ID two men killed in weekend shootings

Philadelphia police on Monday morning identified two men shot and killed over the weekend.

Philadelphia police on Monday morning identified two men shot and killed over the weekend.

Tyrel Whitaker, 27, was shot twice in his chest on a basketball court near Eighth and Poplar streets about 2 p.m. Sunday, according to police. The North 10th Street man was pronounced dead at Hahnemann University Hospital a short time later.

Neither a suspect nor a motive has been identified in Whitaker's death.

Julius Clayton, 32, of the 3200 block of McMichael Street, was shot in the head in the city's Crescentville section late Friday. He was pronounced dead at Albert Einstein Medical Center about 11:30 p.m. Friday.

The homicide occurred on the 5500 block of Hill Creek Drive. Police were called there for a report of a person with a gun.

Police are hunting a suspect in Clayton's death, according to spokeswoman Officer Christine O'Brien.
