(Update) Police seek suspect whose punch landed off-duty detective in coma

An off-duty detective is in a medically induced coma Sunday after an assailant punched him the night before at a Manhattan subway station.

An off-duty detective remains in a medically induced coma early Sunday as police track down the assailant who punched him the night before at a Manhattan subway station.

The officer, who remained unidentified, was reportedly waiting at the southbound 6 train platform at East 23rd Street and Sixth Avenue in Gramercy at around 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

At some point, the recovering cop got into a verbal dispute with the suspect, who stood nearby at the station with two women.

The man threw a punch at the detective, who fell to the ground and struck his head against the concrete. The officer, described as a 29-year-old officer on the force for six years, was rushed to Bellevue Hospital Center, where doctors placed him in a medically induced coma.

Authorities described the suspect, who fled the scene immediately after the attack, as 5-feet-9-inches and 200 pounds. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans.

Last week, a Manhattan man was taken to the hospital in critical condition after a single punch from his attacker in an unrelated incident slammed his head back against the pavement of a Hell's Kitchen street.
