Police: Suspect connected to Queens hammer attacks in custody

Authorities were unable to confirm the identify of the man in custody, who had not yet been arrested or charged in connection to three robberies in Queens.

Police said on Monday that they had a suspect in connection to a series of violent, hammer-wielding attacks in Queens.

Authorities were unable to confirm the identify of the man in custody, who had not yet been arrested or charged by early evening Monday.

On Sunday, police were looking for Anthony Coward, 28, in connection to three daytime robberies.

The attacks began more almost two months ago. On March 5, a 26-year-old pregnant woman said she was approached from behind on a Jamaica, Queens street by a man who struck her head with a silver hammer and fled the scene with her handbag.

Then on May 4, a 23-year-old man told police a man slammed a hammer at his head while at the Rockaway Avenue subway station on Fulton Street. The attacker proceeded to swing and hit the victim multiple times along his body before running off with the victim's wallet.

Most recently a third victim said he was also at the Rockaway Avenue station when the 32-year-old took a hammer to his head as he used a MetroCard kiosk at the Rockaway Avenue station. The suspect again ran away form the station with the victim's wallet.
