The city’s Department of Education is firing a Queens elementary school principal after an investigation revealed that she regularly showed up late to work.
According to Special Commissioner of Investigation Richard Condon, Marcella Sills of P.S. 106 was “frequently late or absent from work but received her full salary without any time being deducted.”
Condon on Tuesday recommended that Sills be fired immediately.
According to the 13-page report, Sills often showed up to the school between 9:15 a.m. and noon.
The school’s custodian, Samuel Ordonez, told investigators that Sills would call him on his cellphone to let him know that she was nearby or outside the school. Sills would then park her BMW in the school’s driveway and Ordonez would lock the gate and assist her with her bags. They would then enter the school through a side door and walk upstairs to her office on the third floor.
Condon’s office opened the investigation following a New York Post report last month that said Sills was a frequent “no show” at work.
The probe also revealed that the school’s former assistant principal, Tonya West, did not keep records and supplied recently created time cards when asked to produce documentation of her time and attendance.
The education department has already taken steps to terminate Sills, the Post reported.
