Queens woman dies after MTA bus strikes her: Police

Officials said a Queens woman was struck and killed by an MTA bus as she crossed a street only blocks away from her home on Wednesday night.

Officials said a Queens woman was struck and killed by an MTA bus as she crossed a street only blocks away from her home on Wednesday night.

 

 

Melania Ward, 55, was only a few minutes away from her Ditmars home as authorities said she approached the intersection of Astoria Boulevard and 80th Street shortly before 10 p.m.

 

She was crossing along the busy boulevard when investigators said the northbound Q47 bus Ward had reportedly just gotten off from began to turn right onto Astoria, striking and killing Ward in the process.

Officers and paramedics arrived at the scene soon after the accident, finding her unconscious and unresponsive. EMS rushed her to Elmhurst Hospital Center where doctors declared her dead upon arrival.

The bus driver remained at the scene. No charges have been filed, and police consider the investigation ongoing.
