The R train’s Montague Street tunnel is set to close tonight as the MTA prepares to start work on a 14-month long project to repair damage caused by Hurricane Sandy.
The MTA pumped 27 million gallons of water out of the tunnel following the storm last October.
The agency announced in early June that it would need to close the tunnel, which connects Manhattan and Brooklyn, for 14 months to complete the repairs.
During the shutdown, the R train will run in two sections on weekdays: from Forest Hills-71st Street in Queens to Whitehall Street in Manhattan; and from Court Street to Bay Ridge-95th St. in Brooklyn.
Riders will have to transfer to one of 11 alternate routes at one of the last four stations in Brooklyn before the tunnel.
On weekends, the R train will run over the Manhattan Bridge and will not stop at Court St. and Jay-St./MetroTech in Brooklyn, or the City Hall, Cortlandt Street, Rector Street and Whitehall Street stations in Lower Manhattan.
