NYC Transit knew the aging brick ceiling at the 181st Street was unstable for 10 years before it eventually collapsed in 2009, an MTA inspector general report revealed yesterday.
During a 1999 rehab, Transit found the ceiling was unstable. A temporary wooden shield was put up, but no permanent fix was made, the report states.
In Aug. 2009, a chunk of the ceiling fell onto the 1 train tracks. No one was inured, but they easily could have been. Transit is implementing the report’s safety suggestions, a spokesperson said.
