A reward is being offered for information that helps authorities track down the source of a pipe bomb found in a Marshfield street on Sunday afternoon, the second such device found in a Massachusetts community just days apart.

Up to $5,000 is being offered through the statewide Arson Watch Rewards Program for information that helps solve the case, the state fire marshal’s office said on Monday.

The bomb was found on Ocean Street on Sunday afternoon and may have been there for some time, authorities said. The state fire marshal’s office said it may have fallen off a car during transport, which is why it was in the street.

Investigators are still trying to determine exactly how long the bomb was in the street before police were alerted to it.

“If anyone saw the object in the street over the weekend, that information could help us pinpoint when it first appeared; and if anyone has any information about the device itself, please come forward confidentially,”Marshfield Police Chief Phillip A. Tavares said in a statement.

People were evacuated from the area and the device did blow up when the bomb squad disrupted it. There was no danger to the public during the disruption, authorities said.

“The danger was that someone handling it prior to the detonation could have been seriously injured,” state Fire Marshal Stephen Coan said in a statement.

On Friday, police and the bomb squad responded to a pipe bomb found on the spare tire affixed to the back of a car parked in Worcester. The bomb was deactivated with a water cannon.

A spokeswoman for the state fire marshal’s office said investigators do not believe there is a connection between the Worcester and Marshfield bombs.

Anyone with information can call Marshfield police at781-834-6655 or the statewide arson hotline at 800-682-9229.
