The family of Boston Marathon bombing victim Martin Richard recently spoke about the upcoming “emotional” anniversary and the strength of their daughter who also lost a leg in the blasts.

The Richard family recently posted an online update with a month to go before the start of the Marathon.

On the blog, the family shared a photo of Jane, the younger sister of Martin Richard, the 8-year-old killed during last year’s marathon. Jane lost her left leg below the knee, but has been working hard on a “long and difficult road to recovery.”

The family said the foundation Wiggle Your Toes recently donated a “Cheetah” running leg, which is designed for athletics and everyday use. Her team at United Prosthetics also donated their time and labor to help Jane get to running.

“Never self-conscious and always smiling, Jane has worn it to school several times which speaks to the can-do spirit she has displayed over the last 11 months,” the family said.

Also, the family spoke about their work for the foundation being set up to honor their son’s memory and how it helps as the anniversary approaches.

“There is much activity in our lives these days, which goes a long way toward distracting us from what is certain to be an emotional one-year anniversary on April 15,” the family said. “A day doesn’t pass when we don’t cry over the loss of Martin, but we also laugh when we think about him, which feels like the right way to remember a little boy with a zest for life and a caring heart.”
