Route 3: Two rollovers and one deer struck in 40-minute period

Route 3 was packed with turmoil this afternoon, with state police reporting two roll over crashes and one crash involving a deer within a 40-minute period.

The first incident was a rollover crash on the northbound side in the area of Derby Street in Hingham.

The cause of the crash has yet to be determined, police said, but two people were transported to south Shore Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Ten minutes later there was another crash on the southbound side of Route 3 – within sight of the first crash.

A vehicle was transporting a couch that fell off and landed on the roadway. Another car swerved to avoid the couch and rolled over, sending two more people to South shore hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Police said a citation will be issued for the unsecured load.

The third accident involved a vehicle striking a deer on the northbound side of Route 3 by Exit 13 in Hanover. The deer ran off into the woods after causing damage to the vehicle, police said.

Traffic was significantly impacted as troopers remove vehicles from the roadway. Traffic has been shut down intermittently to allow for medical assistance, clean up and removal of vehicles, police said.

As of 12:30 p.m. Route 3 has been completely reopened.
