Sanitation Dept. keeps busy with trash and slush

Snow laborers roamed the five boroughs last night, extra hands hired by the city to work through the morning shoveling slush and cleaning corners.

“We’re clearing the remnants of the blizzard,” said Sanitation Department spokesman Matthew LiPani. The night laborers, he explained, were brought in to tackle stubborn snow piles at bus shelters and crosswalks.

Meanwhile, to tackle its other mounting problem — tons of holiday trash — the Department of Sanitation dispatched 1,100 trucks for the first collecting day since Dec. 24.

“We are looking to have collection back to normal by the end of the week,” LiPani said.

New Yorkers with Wednesday trash pickup should make sure their trash is not covered by melting snow, to make pickups go smoothly.
