As if riding SEPTA wasn’t exciting enough, police are investigating a shooting at a Market-Frankford Line train Monday night — the second shooting at a SEPTA vehicle in service since June.
The shooting happened around 7:30 p.m. at the Somerset station and was one of two incidents within a few hours involving SEPTA vehicles. Passengers were on the train when a male being chased by two armed suspects ran to the station, jumped the turnstile and bolted towards a train as it pulled out of the station, officials said. The assailants gave chase and fired multiple shots, one of which struck the train, but no one was injured.
SEPTA spokeswoman Jerri Williams said the victim never boarded the train, but hid in the station until the gunmen left.
“SEPTA operates in Philadelphia. What happens on SEPTA is a microcosm of what happens in Philadelphia,” Williams said. “We know that there’s violence occurring out there and [when] we operate in the city we may get caught in the crossfire.”
