Residents watched from the street as more than 100 firefighters battled the flames.
The Red Cross was assisting those forced to flee their apartments, and Somerville officials are directing those who were displaced to Argenziano School at 290 Washington St.
City officials wrote on the Somerville Facebook page, "We ask anyone affected by the fire to please check in so that we can offer any necessary services and make sure all residents in the area are OK."
Fire trucks from several Boston-area communities, including Chelsea, Revere, Medford and Malden, assisted in extinguishing the fire.
