Sgt. Rex to be reunited with Marine Megan Leavey

Marine Megan Leavey will finally be able to bring home Sgt. Rex, the military working dog she served with in Iraq, according to Sen. Chuck Schumer.

After a petition launched by Schumer was signed by more than 20,000 people, the duo will finally be united.

Leavey and Rex worked side by side in Iraq searching for IEDs and both were injured in the field. After the two recovered, Leavey was sent home with a Purple Heart and Rex continued to work in the field.

Now that he is getting older, and will no longer be fit for service, Leavey sought to adopt her beloved wartime canine, but the process was caught up in military red tape for months.

But, the Air Force has signed off on the final adoption papers for Leavey to adopt Rex, Schumer’s office announced Monday night. The Marine Corps are just now concluding the final paperwork.

Leavey is originally from upstate Rockland County, New York.
