Social service agency suspended by city

The city has stopped referring new cases to a social service agency being investigated for possible neglect in the death of a 2-month-old last month, a Department of Human Services spokesperson said yesterday.

The city has stopped referring new cases to a social service agency being investigated for possible neglect in the death of a 2-month-old last month, a Department of Human Services spokesperson said yesterday.

District Attorney Seth Williams said Monday investigators would determine whether social workers with Lutheran Children and Family Services were at fault in the starvation death of Quasir Alexander. Two workers have been suspended and the boy's mother, 32-year-old Tanya Williams, has been charged with murder.

“They are still under contract with us, but we’re no longer referring cases to them at this point,” said DHS spokeswoman Alicia Taylor. She did not know how much the city was paying Lutheran for “several” contracts. The infant reportedly weighed less at death than he did at birth.
