South Jersey man set himself on fire in National Mall: police

Investigators determined the man, who died after being rushed to a local hospital in critical condition, had deliberately set himself on fire.

Police in Washington, D.C., say the man who died after he set himself on fire in the National Mall on Oct. 4 was from South Jersey.

Metropolitan Police on Monday identified the man as John Constantino, 64, of Mount Laurel, Burlington County, according to reports.

Police responded to the area of Seventh Street and Madison Drive Northwest about 4:25 p.m. last Friday for a report that a man had sustained severe burns there. Investigators later determined the man, who died after being rushed to a local hospital in critical condition, had deliberately set himself on fire.

The case remains under investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department's homicide division.
