Steve DiRoberto: Man found dead downtown was in a fight, police say (UPDATED)

A man found dead in the Financial District this weekend was likely the victim of a fight, police said Sunday.

“We believe the victim was involved in a physical altercation,” said a police spokesman, Officer James Kenneally. “As to the cause and manner of death, those issues are still under investigation and have yet to be determined.”

Police have not yet identified the man, but his employer identified him as Steve DiRoberto, 27, of Worcester. DiRoberto worked for Newbury Street real estate company Boston Luxe Real Estate.

A man who answered the phone at the company Monday morning directed a reporter to the statement on the company’s website.

“Our family lost one of it’s brightest. And it was senseless. There is no lesson to take from it. Just a void where the person was. A man with high aspirations, large dreams, and the work ethic to get there,” the statement read. “The pain of losing such an amazing and gifted person like DiRo is simply indescribable. Our remorse will be endless.”

The company said they planned to promote DiRoberto at the beginning of the year.

DiRoberto was found unconscious near Franklin and Broad streets by officers on patrol in the area just after 2 a.m. Saturday, police said.

DiRoberto was suffering from a head injury when officers found him. He was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital where he later died.

Police were initially unsure how the man died. Cheryl Fiandaca, a police spokeswoman, told the Globe in an e-mail that the man might have sustained the head injury from a fall.

DiRoberto was found just after closing time in an area with multiple bars and late-night venues.

Police did not say Sunday where the man was coming from or if they had surveillance images from the incident.
