Annie Perasa is, according to StoryCorps founder Dave Isay, "awesome."
Annie recorded her story with her husband, Danny. The first time they stopped in at StoryCorps, they described their first date, 25 years later. Annie recounted the love letters Danny would leave her each morning ("To my princess, the weather out today is extremely rainy. I'll call you at 11:20 in the morning," he would write), and Danny spoke adoringly of Annie.
"Being married is like having a color television set, you never want to go back to black-and-white," Danny says.
After Danny fell ill with sudden, fast-acting cancer, StoryCorps went to their home in Brooklyn and did a follow up interview. Danny died a few hours after it aired on NPR. Listeners sent in thousands of letters to Annie. Annie made two copies of every letter. She buried one copy with Danny and kept the other for herself. She said she opens one a day, in place of the letter Danny would have left her.
