Reports are emerging that a police officer was shot by a suspect last night, who was then slain by police officers.

Officer Steve Korpalski, a 14-year veteran of the 15th district, was being treated at Albert Einstein Medical Center last night, NBC reported.

The shooting reportedly occurred around 12:48 a.m. this morning on the 6400 block of Ditman Street in Tacony.

Korpalski and his partner were responding to a report of a man with a gun. When they encountered the suspect, who has not been identified, at the intersection of Magee and Torresdale avenues, he reportedly immediately began shooting at officers, reports say.

Korpalski was hit. Three other officers returned fire, slaying the suspect.

"We're extremely lucky tonight," Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said at a 2 a.m. press conference announcing the incident, according to Fox 29.

No other suspects are believed to be involved in the shooting.
