One man was killed and another was being sought Wednesday after the pair allegedly shot two undercover Boston Police officers in Dorchester.

The shootout happened around 1:45 p.m., after the officers approached the men at 1500 Dorchester Ave. and one of the men pulled a gun.

The shooting suspect was shot by police and later died, and the second fled on foot toward Ashmont Station. Both officers sustained non-life threatening gunshot wounds to their leg and thigh areas.

It was not clear what caused the dispute.

“They came upon something that was going on and that’s what we’re trying to determine. Were these two individuals together doing something when a firearm was about to be used, or were they actually engaging each other when officers came upon them?” Boston Police Chief Daniel Linskey said at the scene Wednesday.

The second suspect was described as a black male, with a light complexion, a slim build, a maroon shirt with stripes and braided hair, police said. Police were unsure whether the surviving suspect had fired any shots.

“It could be that he was a victim in this and ran from the gun battle, but at least he was doing some nefarious acts that caused some concerns for the officers,” Linskey said.

The involved officers were part of the department’s Drug Control Unit, and that they were in the area for a separate investigation.

After the shootout, a closure extended from Talbot Avenue to St. Mark’s Road while officers conducted a four-hour on-foot search of the neighborhoods.

Chief Linksey said police were conducting a suspect search “along the path of flight,” and were also looking for any kind of weapon that may have been dropped. They were also checking video surveillance.
