Suspect named ‘Coward’ hit victims with hammer from behind: NYPD

It takes a certain kind of criminal to hit his victimsover the head from behind before robbing them, and police are searching for a suspect who appears to be well-named.

The NYPD is searching for a 28-year-old man named Anthony Coward who is accused of robbing three people over a four-day period last week in Queens.He struck each of his victims on the headwith a silver hammer before makingoff with their valuables, police said.

The first incident took place at around 11 a.m. on May 4 at the Rockaway Avenue subway station on Fulton Street. After the suspect attacked him and fled with his wallet, the victim, a 23-year-old man, was treated at Brookdale Hospital and released.

The following morning, on Monday of last week, a 26-year-old woman was standing outside a residence in Briarwood when the suspect approached her from behind and struck her with the hammer. He fled on foot with her handbag. The woman was taken to Jamaica Hospital in stable condition.

Coward struck again at the Rockaway Avenue station on Wednesday, police said, attacking a 32-year-old man who was attempting to purchase a MetroCard. He fled after the man handed over his money. The victim was treated for a head injury at Brookdale Hospital and released.

The NYPD released a photo of Coward, who is described at 5-foot-10 and between 130 and 150 pounds.
