Swindler pleads guilty to $5.3M mortgage fraud

Using fake documents, a dead attorney’s signature and forged mortgage satisfactions, a Brooklyn man was able to defraud $5.3 million from two Nassau County financial lenders.

But, yesterday, Mayer Goldberger, 46, of Sunset Park, pleaded guilty to grand larceny charges.
Besides having to repay the $5.3 million to BRT

Realty Trust in Great Neck and New York Community Bank in Jericho, Goldberger could face up to 25 years in prison at his March 9 sentencing.

According to the district attorney’s office, Goldberger finagled the phony mortgage money to bankroll property in Hartford, Conn., and from 2005 to 2009 employed various underhanded tricks including forging documents to close out outstanding loans, creating a bogus title report through his own company and even forging a dead attorney’s signature.

Goldberger’s attorney, Robert McDonald, did not return calls for comment.
