T workers to the rescue in train theft

Two MBTA employees thwarted a robbery at knifepoint yesterday morning at South Station.

Jimmy Finn and John Doherty say they heard a woman scream near the stairs from the Silver Line platform to the mezzanine around 7 a.m. before giving chase. Christopher Spiridis-Chase allegedly robbed the woman’s iPhone at knifepoint but crashed into the gate while trying to flee.

“He knew he had nowhere to go,” Finn said. “He put his hands behind his back as if he was going to be arrested.”

The employees didn’t realize the suspect had a four-inch jackknife until transit police searched him. “That was a little scary,” Doherty said. “Everything is on camera. Really for anyone to try something like this is really foolish.”
