Police are describing the death of an 18-year-old Amityville student by a drunk driver as a “Christmas tragedy.” Tynielle Silvera was killed Wednesday night while crossing Sunrise Highway near County Line Road.

Lt. Robert Edwards of the Suffolk County Police Department noted that Silvera was returning from a tutoring job when she was struck.

Yesterday morning, Kenneth Serwan, 46, a financial sector worker from Lindenhurst, was charged with driving while intoxicated. Edwards said police are still interviewing witnesses, but Silvera appeared to be in the crosswalk when she was hit.
